Know about the types of pipe you are using in Home

In house and commercial buildings during plumbing works, we generally use PPR or CPVC pipes. In past, there is the use of GI pipes. But nowadays, PPR and CPVC pipes are mostly used. This blog illustrates the characteristics of types of pipe we are using in-home.
PPR pipes
PPR pipes are those types of pipe which are made from Polypropylene Random Copolymer are mostly used for warm and cold water distribution in buildings, industries, heating systems and ice water.
Characteristics :
- Hygienic system for water transportation because it does not corrode.
- PPR pipes and fittings are cheaper, eco-friendly, non-toxic and can be recycled.
- Have a multilayer design, flexible, tough and lightweight.
- PPR is a flexible option. While working with PPR we do not need any chemical substance for joints and can hold better than CPVC in hotter and colder conditions. PPR is connected using a heating technique, which provides maximum strength at the joint.
- Resistant to aggressive environments (for example, in agricultural applications).
- Low load loss because of lower friction than traditional piping systems.
- Durability of fifty years even within the cold and warm temperature and stress pressure situation.
- Little noisy, with little loss of load because of friction.
- Low thermal conductivity provides an efficient system.
- Resistant to leakage of electric currents.
CPVC pipes
CPVC pipes are thermoplastic pipe made of Chlorinated Poly Vinyl Chloride, which comprises 57% chlorine (obtained from industrial grade salt) and 43% carbon (obtained mainly from oil/gas through ethylene).
Characteristics:
- CPVC pipes are durable and adequate for many plumbing applications.
- Use of CPVC pipes is limited since they have great rigidity in the plastic raising their sensitivity to shock and easily break independently of their use
- CPVC is formed up of two elements salt and oil, that can be harmful to the environment because it is not biodegradable
- PVC pipes are joined using solvent cements and are considered good leak resistant joint.
- However, Solvent cements are not essentially lung friendly and if we care about plumbers who work in our building, proper ventilation must be provided for airflow while working.
- Also, solvent cements used for joints can fail and is usually harmful to health.
- Oxidation, oil and variety of chemicals don’t have any effect over it. It is able to withstand sunlight and flame
- Being biodegradable, CPVC pipes and fittings have less impact on the environment
- CPVC pipes and fittings, find use in recreational use/building, drainage systems, cable insulations, etc.
- CPVC pipes are suitable for unheated water and to be precise they are good for cold water systems
- It is expensive than PPR pipes
- Only 1 per cent of CPVC is recyclable unlike UPVC and PPR
